英语阅读就是“英语思维”：The death toll
在“英语阅读”（if any at all）中，不能替换成“邻家女孩”（把学过的已知的英语用起来改写句子句型）是中国应试教育下造成的一个“后遗症”：因为“不会改”所以干脆“改”成自己“会”的语言（英译汉）算了。
改写句子句型，在中学里只被当做纯粹的语法练习来做一下，但是，“初衷”还是为了考试拿分。其实，只要把我们的“屁股”挪一下，同样的“句子句型改写”其本质就是“英语思维”训练：抛弃汉语理解，换成“邻家女孩”熟练运用另外一个英语表达从而达到“英语理解”的目的。
这就是“把你的目光抬高一寸，你就会看到眼前八百里江山”的morale：不要死盯着“语法”“语法”不放。它就是本来就并不深奥和可以让“砖家”争来争去讲不清的“英语思维”呀。
一、你“怎么读懂”下面的英语？英译汉，也只能英译汉？

二、我们忽略“查英英字典”环节，直接“说出”下面的“英语口语”
1.Okay.I got you.When you say The death toll from tornadoes that devastated,you mean the total number of people who died.
为什么非得要“懂”death toll的汉语意思“才能懂”death toll“什么意思”呢？为什么不给自己一次“把学过的已知的英语用起来”的机会和锻炼呢？
2.Okay.I got you.If a tornado devastates an area,it completely destroyes it,it ruins it.
理由同上。
3.Okay.I got you.At least six workers were killed means at least six workers died,or lost their lives.
4.Okay.I got you.When we sat several workers remained unaccounted for,we mean they are still missing,or nowhere to be found.
语言是越用越熟练的，英语亦如此。但“没英译汉的份”（老电影《董存瑞》里的一句经典台词）：因为“英译汉”也就意味着它拒绝让你“用英语”的机会和锻炼。
都“互联网 英语学习工具”时代了，可是很多人却依然不明白这个简单道理。其实，这些人“学”英语，早已“死”在上个世纪。“理念也罢，方法也罢”（钱钟书《围城》开篇句）。
